fiction writer

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always wanted to read fiction books written in English. I mean, no disrespect to my mother tongue, but I’ve always had this thing for writing. And everyone knows that there is no better place for inspiration and learning to write than reading a lot of books.

I’ve read plenty of books in my life. However, they are mostly in Bangla language (or translated into Bangla). I’ve always wanted to write stories in English. In English, because that gives a wider range of audience access to what I write. I believe I’m fairly comfortable writing in English these days thanks to many hours of practice and many articles that I’ve written as blog posts and news articles.

However, switch to fiction writing and I’ve got nothing. No phrases, no words, nothing. That “Show, don’t tell” is very difficult to apply to your [fiction] writing when you don’t know enough of English language. I’ve been thinking why that is happening to me and I have a conclusion.

I haven’t read enough English literature.

Now, you have to understand that I’ve been in a non-English environment since birth and that limits my capability to understand English as much as I’d like to. I can open CNN or any other news service, read any news article and I’ll understand what the article says. But I can’t just open a fiction book, start reading and understand what the writer means by every word or phrase. Going back and forth between dictionary and book completely kills the pleasure of reading.

But then again, there are books that are meant for people who aren’t very native. I’m looking for your recommendation of that type of books. To start with, Dan Brown’s books always inspire me to read and write. Granted, I don’t understand every word and phrase that he uses in his books like Digital Fortress, but he creates sentences in a manner that even if I don’t understand the meaning of a word or two, I can figure out what meaning the full sentence is carrying.

And that’s the type of book I’m looking for. So if you’re an avid reader, please do suggest me some books which will enrich my vocabulary, teach me some phrases, and inspire me to write — all without taking the fun of reading and understanding the story away.

Thanks for your recommendations in advance. 🙂

    1. Thanks for your comment. I have checked Goodreads and it’s definitely a great place to find great books. What it doesn’t tell me though is whether those books are friendly for people who are new to, well, how should I put it, reading!
