Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, Gravatar, Akismet and a number of other web-based services, just made an exciting announcement a few moments ago. The company is acquiring popular WordPress theme and plugin development company WooThemes, best known for its WordPress e-commerce plugin WooCommerce, and a number of other WordPress themes and plugins. Automattic Founder and CEO Matt Mullenweg announced this just moments ago on his blog. WooThemes also announced this on their official blog. This means one more awesome product joins the lineup of Automattic awesomeness on the web!
As part of the acquisition, the WooThemes/WooCommerce team will become full time Automatticians soon., which means we are getting ready to welcome a good number of staff to Automattic.
WooThemes makes premium themes and plugins for WordPress. But they are most famous for their WooCommerce WordPress plugin which turns your WordPress site into a full-fledged e-commerce platform.
Matt writes on his blog:
WordPress currently powers about 23% of the web. As we work our way toward 51%, WooCommerce joining Automattic is a big step opening WordPress up to an entirely new audience. I can’t wait to see how much more we can build together.
For now, I’m excited just like every other Automattician now that WooThemes is becoming a part of Automattic. It means some Automatticians will focus on improving and polishing up WooCommerce to make it even better in the coming days.
Have you used WooCommerce on your site before? Feel free to share your experience with WooCommerce in the comments below.
